GETTING STARTED IN LAB RESCUE

Starting a Rescue group:

        Here are some excellent resources on starting up your own Lab Rescue. Before you start one though, please be aware that Labs are the #1 breed for number of dogs/puppies registered and you will be VERY busy if you plan to do this on your own. It is ideal to link up with an organized rescue group if possible, perhaps there is a Lab rescue already in your state that you can become a satellite for. as you need to meet them to get and keep your non-profit status.
For filing, costs will vary from state to state. Filing the 501(c)(3) application is expensive. The fee is based on revenues so if you are just getting started your fees will be less than if you wait until you are more established. You may want to consult an attorney and/or an accountant although many groups fill out the paperwork themselves.

               Once you are set up, you will have your usual business expenses: stationery and envelopes, printing, web page, advertising, routine office supplies, post office box, etc. If your Board Members are not volunteers, there are also salaries to pay. Any expenses incurred by Board Members may be reimbursed by the organization or the Board Members may elect to donate their expenses and take a tax deduction. You will need to decide what documentation is needed for people to get reimbursed for their expenses if you go that route.
